The minister of health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng has said that the challenges in accessing vaccines will not affect the country’s re-opening plans.

Dr. Aceng, who is also the Health Minister said that the country will go for a phased re-opening plan, despite having failed to achieve its vaccination targets.

Dr. Aceng made these remarks while facing the Parliamentary COVID-19 response task force on Wednesday.

“You recall that even in the first wave, there was a phased reopening before we carried out vaccination. We will reopen in a phased manner,” Dr. Aceng said.

The health ministry earlier set a target of vaccinating at least 50 percent of the population before fully reopening the country.

Dr. Aceng said that with the scarcity of vaccines at the global market, the country can not sit and wait for this target to be achieved.

“We can not wait for 22 million people to get vaccinated when even the source of vaccine is not clear,” Dr. Aceng added.

The health minister’s comments come at a time when the country is waiting for President Museveni’s address on Covid-19 with the current lockdown ticking down to its end.

Uganda according to the health ministry data has vaccinated only 1,135,916 people so far.
