Uganda’s long-distance sensation Joshua Cheptegei has claimed victory at the 2026 Burj2Burj Dubai Half Marathon after an electrifying sprint finish against two of Africa’s finest runners on Sunday 8, 2026.

Cheptegei crossed the finish line in an impressive 59 minutes and 26 seconds, narrowly defeating Kenya’s Nicolas Kipkorir, who finished second in 59:28. Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu completed the podium in third place with a time of 59:30.

The race delivered a thrilling spectacle as the three elite athletes ran side by side for most of the half marathon, refusing to give each other breathing space. It was only in the final five metres that the contest was decided, with Cheptegei unleashing a powerful finishing kick to pull away and secure the win.

After the race, Cheptegei described the triumph as a key moment in his continued transition from track racing to marathon competition. “I am trusting the process, and this win means a lot to me. I have to keep the dream alive as I look forward to my next marathon race,” Cheptegei said.

The Ugandan star emphasized that the Dubai Half Marathon served as a crucial test as he continues to build the endurance and road experience required for success at the marathon distance. His win is also being viewed as a major boost for road racing in Uganda, encouraging other athletes to embrace the demanding discipline.

Cheptegei’s training partner, Abel Sikowo, highlighted the challenges that come with road racing, noting that many athletes often hesitate to take it on. “Road racing is one of those events that many athletes sometimes don’t feel like taking on because of the aggressive preparations and the long distances,” Sikowo said.

Despite those challenges, Sikowo believes Cheptegei’s victory has shifted attitudes and inspired belief among runners. “For Cheptegei, this win gives inspiration that everyone is capable of doing it as long as you choose to commit and believe in the process,” he added.

Uganda Athletics Federation President Dominic Otuchet also praised Cheptegei, describing the Dubai victory as another major achievement in his decorated career. “This is a spectacular performance and a clear sign of continued progress in Cheptegei’s career. We are proud of him and confident he will achieve even more on the road and in the marathon,” Otuchet said.

Cheptegei’s victory at the 2026 Burj2Burj Dubai Half Marathon further strengthens his growing reputation as he steadily shifts from track dominance to road racing and marathon competition, signaling that the Ugandan champion remains a major force in global long-distance running.
