The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Board has toured key water supply infrastructure projects in Hoima City to assess progress on ongoing works aimed at strengthening water service delivery ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

During the tour, the Board visited the ongoing Hoima Emergency Water Supply Project, which encompasses a 2,000-cubic-metre-per day Water Treatment Plant, reservoir facilities, pipelines and other installations being developed to increase water production, storage and distribution capacity in the city.

The Project Manager for the Hoima Emergency Water Supply Project, Eng. Denis Taremwa, highlighted the progress made so far, noting that implementation currently stands at 37 per cent.

“ The Hoima Emergency Water Supply Project is a key intervention aimed at increasing water production and improving the reliability of supply to Hoima City. We have made significant progress on the various project components and are working towards completing the works in time for commissioning by February 2027, ”
Eng. Denis Taremwa – Director Infrastructure Planning and Development.

The project entails the construction of a raw water intake on River Kafu, a Water Treatment Plant at Rwoga with a capacity of 2,000 cubic metres per day, a 2.9-kilometre raw water pipeline, a 300-cubic-metre storage and balancing reservoir, and a 22-kilometre treated water pipeline from Kikuube to Hoima City

At the project site, the Board was informed that excavation and concrete blinding for the Water Treatment Plant units had been completed, while excavation for the intake works stood at 90 per cent. Steel reinforcement and concrete works for the treatment plant had reached 15 per cent, pipeline surveys were complete, and power extension works stood at 50 per cent.

The Board also noted progress under the AFCON water supply programme, including the completed Hoima City Stadium water supply extension.
The project involved the development and connection of two boreholes: Mparo, with a production capacity of 25 cubic metres per hour, and Kyarwiru, with a capacity of 15 cubic metres per hour.

Both boreholes have been developed, connected to the stadium and commissioned, providing a reliable water source to support the facility as preparations for AFCON 2027 progress.

The Board’s assessment also comes amid plans to extend water supply services to Kabalega International Airport, a strategic facility expected to support increased activity during AFCON 2027.

The proposed airport extension will entail upgrading the Kafu Water Treatment Plant from 2,000 to 3,000 cubic metres per day, laying a 36-kilometre DN200 uPVC/steel bulk transfer pipeline and constructing a 200-cubic-metre storage reservoir at the airport.

The projects form part of NWSC’s broader efforts to strengthen water supply infrastructure in Hoima and ensure that essential facilities are adequately served as Uganda prepares to host AFCON 2027.
