The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) is expanding the Greater Kampala water supply network to meet growing demand in Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono and surrounding areas.
The works are being undertaken under the Rehabilitation, Restructuring, Rezoning and Extension of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA) Water Supply Network Project, Package 2B, also known as the Katosi Distribution Network Expansion.
The project is designed to connect communities in the Greater Kampala area to the high production capacity of the Katosi Water Treatment Plant.
According to NWSC, the project includes construction of 71 kilometres of transmission mains, three new water reservoirs, two booster stations and upgrades to the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system used to monitor and control the water network.
The infrastructure is expected to support water supply in the Greater Kampala area up to 2040 as the population and demand for water continue to increase.
One of the key components of the project is a 7.7-kilometre DN 1000 pipeline, which is expected to be completed in January 2027.
The pipeline will serve Namugongo, Kira, Buwaate, Bulindo, Mulawa, Kasangati and surrounding areas.
The project also includes the Kungu and Kabulengwa booster stations and reservoirs at Kanyanya, Mutungo and Kabulengwa.
The booster stations are intended to improve the movement and distribution of water across the expanding network, while the reservoirs will increase storage capacity and help stabilise supply.
The expansion comes as Greater Kampala continues to experience rapid urbanisation, increasing pressure on existing water infrastructure and demand for reliable water services.
NWSC says the ongoing works will help bring the additional production capacity from Katosi closer to consumers and strengthen the distribution network serving the metropolitan area.
The latest project update shows construction progressing on the pipelines, booster stations and reservoirs, with the first major relief expected when the 7.7-kilometre pipeline is completed in January 2027.
